About Marcus

 

Self-taught chef, Marcus Bean , whose passion for cooking drove him to win Iron chefUKin 2010. He’s lived in pubs since the age of 5 in and around Oxfordshire. At the age of 16 Marcus was working as a pig farmer, when his parents decided to up sticks and buy a pub inShropshire. They asked him to move with them and help renovate and run their new pub.

While helping run the family pub, Marcus studied sound engineering in Manchester and in 2004 Marcus and his wife decided it was time to take on their first pub. After two years of employing chef’s and being let down, Marcus decided that it was time he got in the kitchen and started  teaching himself how to cook from scratch and create new and exciting dishes.

Having run the pub successfully for 5 years, Marcus found himself being selected as a contestant for Channel 4’s Iron Chef UK. He breezed through the first two rounds and went on to beat top chef Martin Blunos in the final! Not bad for someone who taught themselves to cook, and who had only ever cooked in the pub kitchen.

Following his success on the show, Marcus has appeared on Good Food’s “Market Kitchen”, Channel 4’s Drop Down Menu, BBC Online “video recipes with Lisa Faulkner”. Live appearances include, BBC Goodfood show, Scotland, Birmingham & London. The Ideal Home Show, Ludlow food festival, Shrewsbury Flower Show.

In 2011 Marcus reached the semi-finals of National chef of the year with the Craft guild of Chefs.

Other clients Marcus has done work for include, Tesco online video recipes, Unilever, Waring & cuisinart  kitchen products, Knor,  Optomen productions. Marcus has also write’s cookery articles and recipes for Foodie magazine London & Stir it up magazine. His recipes regularly appear in magazines like, delicious, more magazine, closer, Hello.com and many more. Marcus also writes a regular weekly column for the Shropshire star on what he’s u to on a regular basis.

Marcus has also been filming the new show “Whats Cooking” on Channel 4. He was approached by the channel as the opening guest chef teaming up with fantastic Rachel Allen, the show is presented by Lisa Faulkner & Ben Shephard.

He’s a regular chef on ITV This Morning with cookery slots every fortnight, cooking with Holly Willoughby & Phillip Schofield or during school holidays with Ruth and Eamon Holmes.

 When he’s not busy cooking Marcus like’s to keep fit, recently he entered and completed the virgin London marathon, finishing In a time of 4 hours and 52 minutes. Marcus raised over £1800 for Motor Neurones disease association.

Marcus & jenny have also recently sold their pub, The New Inn , Baschurch.  This has enabled them to concentrate on the school and bed and breakfast.
